This is a magnificent crystal of quartz var. amethyst, probably the finest single amethyst that I have seen from this alpine-type locality. Despite the small overall size, this is a large amethyst for the locality but what impresses me the most is the mind-blowing quality it exhibits. The color is a highly saturated deep purple and there are two sharp phantoms in the crystal which are best viewed at the display face. As a bonus there are the so characteristic for the locality, red "strings" of hematite as inclusions! The piece is complete all around with no damage. It is also freestanding at various angles. It was attached on quartz matrix and it was detached-off it naturally(due to ice conditions in the pockets in the location) so the base is not terminated or crystallized. The luster is also excellent and the crystal is as sharp as it gets. It was discovered around 1980 when the locality was discovered by a local geologist and back at the time when the best colored amethysts were found. This is a cherry-picked specimen from the geologist's personal collection, as sadly the other pieces were damaged.
